Ridiculous Documentary on PBS

The program, Secrets of the Dead, follows some expert/archaeologist/crackpot, Dr. Jeannine Davis-Kimball about looking for the truth of the Amazons. So they followed her to some archaeological dig in Russia (how they found it and determined it would be related to the Amazons I have no idea). They say this is a burial site and rummage around and find different objects (no weapons from what I recall) and then they find what look to be earrings. The head researcher says “oh that settles it, we’ve definitely found the grave of a woman”. Uhh, talking about cultures from 2000+ years ago, who knows what the social customs were then. Maybe men wore earrings.

Moving on, they find a skeleton and yes, it is a woman. But then my question is, if this woman is supposedly an Amazonian warrior, why is she wearing fancy earrings? Wouldn’t that be a bad idea in combat? Modern women soldiers don’t wear high heals or anything.

Later in the program they take the skull to Germany to have a face reconstructed around it based on bone structure. Ok cool, I’ve seen other shows that do this. They play around with it and come up with a face. They show it to the head researcher lady and she is shocked and disappointed by it because the reconstructed face had brown hair and brown eyes. This is a big let down because the Greek accounts described the Amazon women as blond.

Uhhh, hello? They had a skull to look at, they no doubt just guessed on hair color. You can’t look at a skull for information on something superficial like hair or eye color. It was absurd, absolutely absurd. I turned the show off in disgust. What a joke, Davis-Kimball claimed to be some kind of expert and yet she gets disappointed because the computer reconstruction of this skull’s face wasn’t blond. Ridiculous.
